Stand with Palestine: Resource and activism guide

22 January 2024

Embark on a journey of solidarity and justice as we explore the compelling world of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, a beacon of non-violent resistance fighting for freedom, justice, and equality for Palestine.

Boycotting, a powerful form of non-violent resistance, emerges as a poignant tool in the pursuit of justice for Palestine. It compels individuals to rethink their role in shaping the narrative of human rights and dignity - Introducing the BDS movement.

BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions):

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led non violent, peaceful movement for freedom, justice and equality. BDS upholds the simple principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity. It's simple to get involved with the BDS movement today. Discover how to get involved.

To show immediate and meaningful solidarity with Palestinians now, the BDS movement has put together a list of action points we must follow. Find them here: URGENT ACTION ALERT

It is important to note that BDS is being illegalised in different parts of the world through efforts of Israel, to criminalise it and associate it with anti-semitism, which it is not.

Over the course of these past months more and more companies have shown us their complicity, and what can only be described as distasteful marketing campaigns and ads. Here are the major perpetrators:

Marks & Spencers - The best undies in the world! Overshadowed forever by a tone-deaf Christmas campaign.

Zara - The go-to fashion destination for this generation, wiped off our favourites list with one photoshoot. Finito.

Starbucks - Once THE staple coffee brand, especially for PSLs. Now doomed to leave a sour taste in all our mouths for eternity.

Late night McDonalds runs. Tainted forever by images of IDF soldiers dropping bombs while eating free fries. Golden arches that once made us smile, now just look sinister.

Coca Cola - A post-spicy-meal essential; a fizzy taste we crave. Profiting from illegal occupation; complicit in oppression - and also, in rotting our teeth.

Non-stop for over three months now, Israel has been bombing homes, whole neighbourhoods, hospitals, schools, mosques and churches in Gaza, while cutting off electricity, fuel, water, medicine and food supplies to the 2.3 million Palestinians there. LET'S KEEP MOBILIZING TO STOP GENOCIDE: IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

When we think of worship in Islam, we often picture praying salah, fasting and giving zakat. However, we can be forgiven to forget that even the smallest actions of following the sunnah are a form of worship. Of course those other, conventional acts of ibadah are important - but to easily maximise reward for your scales in the aakhirah, you need to align your intentions with Islam in everyday life. I am not writing this article to overwhelm you with a list of things you should be doing; I am writing it with the hopes of inspiring you. Start small. You do not have to do everything at once - in fact, you probably should not. Choose one habit that you would like to integrate into your life and pursue that, focusing on consistency. It is okay if you occasionally forget to carry out that action as it is better to do something imperfectly than to abandon it altogether. In this article I have compiled a list of simple sunnahs that you can add to your day which are light on effort and big on reward. No matter where you are regarding your everyday ibadah, there is something for you and I hope you take it. 1. Dua after waking up

This article has been verified for Fiqh accuracy by Shaykh Maruf Ahmed. As a Muslimah who travels fairly often whether for weekend getaways, family trips, or spiritual retreats one of the biggest struggles I’ve faced is keeping my prayers intact without panic. Between my plane landing and hotel check-in, I'd often catch myself thinking, “Will I miss Asr while in traffic? Is it allowed to pray on the plane? Can I shorten my prayers, or is that a Hanafi no-no?” The constant worry used to follow me every time I travelled until I learnt just how much flexibility Islam gives us on the move. So I decided to explore how each of the four major schools of thought Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali approach the rulings on prayer during travel. Spoiler: Islam is far more considerate of our everyday challenges than we sometimes realise. Travelling can be hectic and unpredictable, yet our faith makes space for those moments and eases the burden more than we realise. Tip: If you follow a particular madhhab, stick to it consistently during your trip to avoid confusion or accidental mixing of rulings.
